How to Pick a Machine

Three questions in order:

    What's the largest job you'll do in a year?
    Palm-sized: 50–100W · Door-panel: 100–200W · Structural: 200–300W · Industrial: 500W+
  2. 2
    What's the worst contaminant you'll face?
    Light oxide: any class · Multi-layer paint: 200W+ · Heavy mill scale: 300W+ pulsed or 1000W+ CW · Foundry: CW territory
  3. 3
    What's the most damage-sensitive substrate?
    Aluminum, anodized, thin polymer: bias down in wattage, up in operator skill. Carbon steel, cast iron, masonry: wattage is permissive. Stainless: middle.

The mistake operators make is buying for question 1 and ignoring question 3. A 300W on a delicate job is a worse outcome than a 100W on a heavy job — the heavy job just takes longer.
